Protecting Your Child from Shoulder Dystocia and Other Birth Injuries

Labor and delivery can be frightening for parents, as many things can go wrong during delivery and birth. Shoulder dystocia is a common injury that can occur during childbirth. When the child's head is delivered, but the shoulder gets stuck in the birth canal, it can cause serious injuries to the child, and if the child is not removed quickly and safely, the umbilical cord can become compressed and the child could die.

Many cases of shoulder dystocia injuries are simply accidents, but some of them are caused by the negligence of the doctors and nurses handling the delivery.

Infant Shoulder Injury Causes

While there are many potential causes of shoulder dystocia, some of the most common causes include:

  • The child's rotational position: The child's shoulders need to be positioned correctly coming out of the birth canal. Many cases of dystocia occur as a result of the child being turned slightly, causing unwanted pressure on the child's shoulders.
  • Unnecessary use of force: Although a child can easily get stuck in the birth canal during the birth, shoulder dystocia can result from excessive force during delivery, so delivering doctors need to use great care.
  • Use of forceps and other equipment: Because these instruments can be so dangerous to children, forceps and vacuum devices should be used for delivery in only the most extreme of circumstances. In many cases, delivering doctors will use these devices when they are not truly needed, causing shoulder dystocia and other serious injuries.

We represent parents of children who have suffered shoulder dystocia as a result of these and other birth errors. Medical negligence during birth is a serious breach of the medical profession's duty to its patients.
